Dear Parents,
Welcome to my class! I am looking forward to working with you as a partner in educating your child. My goal is to facilitate learning in an exciting and fun way. As an educator, it is my job to see that your child becomes a lifelong learner. To achieve this, it is essential that we work together to ensure that your child is working to his or her potential in a successful and meaningful way.
As Your Partner I’d like to tell you a little about myself. This is my 21st year with Leon County schools. I have my Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and Molecular Biology from Westminster College in Pennsylvania. At Florida State, I worked 2 years towards a Master’s Degree in Immunology before transferring into the Master’s Program in Science Education. I hold Teaching Certifications in Biology and in Middle Grades Integrated Science. I love both science and technology
I believe that a good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for maximum school success. Throughout the year I will communicate with you through notes, telephone calls, e-mail, my classroom website, progress reports, report cards, and parent-teacher conferences. If there are any questions, which arise during the year, please do not hesitate to contact me. I welcome the opportunity to speak with you. Please write a note, email me at [email protected] , or call the School at 414-2670 to let me know of a convenient time to call or meet with you.
You and your child can keep up with what is going on in the classroom through my webpage which can be accessed through the SCMS website. Go to the science subject area link, click on it, and when the list of teachers comes up find my name and click on the website link. At my homepage, you will find a Link to the Earth/Space Science class. I am using the LiveBinders Site to organize and store all of my documents this year. There will be a binder for my lesson plans, general class information, and chapter work and materials. To use these binders, all you will need to do is to click on the appropriate link. Binders are organized by the grading period, the chapter, and week.
Students will be required to keep a 3 ring binder to hold their class materials. The first section of the notebook will hold their copy of the beginning of the year paperwork, the 2nd section will be dedicated to the daily bell ringer questions. Each additional section will be dedicated to the chapters we study. Each of these sections is where students will put their notes, vocabulary, lab work, class work, and homework for each chapter. Students will be expected to keep their notebooks up to date and organized. They will be expected to come to class prepared to work, i.e. on time, ready to get started, and with homework done. Coming to class prepared mentally and with proper supplies is essential to a good learning atmosphere.
Students will be given a copy of my Grading Policy and of my discipline plan, so please look for this. Both your and your student’s signature will be required on it. Students who violate class rules will receive poor citizenship grades and other teacher interventions. Since this is a Science Class, your student’s conduct and ability to follow procedures are essential to ensuring a safe learning environment. Any violation of lab or class rules during a lab activity will result in removal from the lab on that day. In return, the students can expect to experience a number of hands on learning situations that will be both fun and educational.
I also require that any student scoring a "D" or lower on a quiz or test must take that test/quiz home and obtain your signature. You can see if your child has a quiz needing your signature by checking their on-line grades. Students who score less than a 70% on a test have the option to retake the test. The highest score that can be achieved on a test retake is 70%. Further I do accept late work but late work and it will be penalized 20% on the grade for being late.
Looking Forward to working with you,
Karen Brown
